Animal care and welfare is of growing importance in society today and there are a number of opportunities for people interested in a career in this industry. Grooming salons, animal welfare charities, kennels and catteries, pet shops, veterinary practices, and animal care shelters are keen to recruit qualified employees.

The Animal Care Department has a new purpose built animal centre which offers the opportunity to develop a range of handling skills and to learn about the appropriate care requirements of different animals

BTEC Level 1 Diplomas are practical “hands on” programmes taught in the context of real jobs and careers in a vocational sector. This gives the chance to explore the opportunities in that sector, and acquire the appropriate vocational skills.

The course is designed to develop learners’ ability in animal care through effective use and combination of the knowledge gained in the qualification and to provide specialist studies directly relevant to the animal care sector.

The course is also designed to develop a range of employability skills and techniques, understanding, personal qualities and attitudes essential for success in working life. It is expected that this course will consist of units taken from the following:

•Check that a small animal is healthy

•Assist with catching and restraining a small animal

•Groom a small animal

•Assist with the movement of animals

•Assist with feedstuffs for small animals

•Assist with the care of animals

•Assist with animal accommodation

•Maintain the safety of self and others in the workplace

•Assist with the movement and handling of small animals  

Please note - students will complete the Level 1 Certificate in the first year, and will only progress to the diploma on satisfactory completion of the Certificate. Alternatively, they may wish to be considered for an alternative Level 1 Certificate in another land based discipline at the end of year 10.

We believe that it is very important to ensure that any course is the correct one for a particular student group, in •academic level;

•balance between academic and practical content;

•and the methods of assessment, to suit the students’ learning styles.

 Each applicant is therefore required to complete an application form, and the school is expected to provide each applicants’ Fischer Family Trust predicted GCSE grades. Students will also be required to complete a short computerised assessment test to diagnose their learning style, and to determine the literacy level. Learners must be able to study at Level 1 Successful applicants are therefore likely to be assessed as predicted to be working towards GCSE grades of D/E in English, Maths and Science, and to demonstrate a literacy level of Entry 3, working towards level 1. Students will also be interviewed, to assess their commitment and interest in the vocational area.

Learners are assessed using a variety of planned activities, eg presentations, written work, practical performance, etc, to generate the evidence required for each module. There are no traditional exams.

Points Equivalence 37 credits

This course is offered for Key Stage 4 students

There is no charge to the individual student or parent/carer but there is a cost to the school. Interested students and parents/carers should therefore consult their school work Related Learning co-ordinator, or Head of year, before applying.

For Schools Only: This programme will be charged at £12.00 per hour per student or £132.00 per group (minimum of 11 students)

Students who complete this course could progress post 16 to the Edexcel Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Animal Care, Horticulture, or Countryside & Environment
