Overview
The Diploma is a one year full time programme which is recognised by universities as an alternative to “A” levels for entry to many degree courses. You must be 19 years of age by 1st September in the year the course starts. There are several Diploma options available depending on the Campus. Each Diploma is divided into units grouped into subject areas for each of which you can gain credits. Interviews are held after January up to the start of the course which is usually in September. Please note this is one of two Social Science Access courses at Leeds City College. Each course has different content and so it is advised you look at both before applying, to see the other course (offered at the Thomas Danby Campus) please click below:
What will I Learn?
All units are class based and learning is facilitated by formal lectures, practical group work and ICT interaction. The Diploma in Social Sciences offers a choice of subjects. The subjects are relevant for those wishing to undertake degrees in Social work, Nursing or Social Science degrees such as sociology, psychology. Subjects offered on this Diploma include;
  • Sociology
  • Psychology
  • Social Policy
Students can choose these along with;
  • Politics
  • Media Studies
More details on combinations and unit content can be discussed at the interview stage.
What are the Entry Requirements?

Formal qualifications are not always required but you must be able to show by your application and interview that you are able to benefit from studying at Level 3 (“A” level standard). You need to have a good standard of written English and all applicants will be required to take a written assessment.

It is desirable that you will have attained a level 2 qualification in English and Maths prior to entry on the Access Diploma as these subjects are often required for Degree level course. Primary teaching degrees also required a GCSE in a science subject. If necessary, you will be able to study a GCSE or a Level 2 qualification alongside your Diploma.

How will I be Assessed?
Assessment includes coursework and exams in two semesters over the year. Some units may include presentation elements – but don’t worry – you will be fully prepared to manage your workload and time. Through a range of support we offer students discover a route to new found confidence and skills! All work is internally moderated and externally moderated by AQA assessors.
Future Opportunities?

The Diploma is deigned for access to many HE courses both locally and nationally. Fortunately we have some of the best Universities here in Leeds. All the local Universities welcome our access students. Trinity University College Leeds for example has a strong tradition of offering our students places for primary education and Psychology along with History and Media. We also have close links with Leeds Met and Leeds University who promote the aims and objectives of the Access Diploma and support increased participation for adult students. Students don’t restrict themselves to only local universities, choices presented are wide and varied and students are encouraged to pick the best suited courses to their situations, needs and interests.
